In 1997, he directed his first film, Le Bund a cent ans, exploring the memories captured in songs from the internationalist Jewish workers’ movement.
In 2001, he spent several months in Yves Saint Laurent's atelier. The resulting film, Yves Saint Laurent, 5 avenue Marceau, and the accompanying photo book, Yves Saint Laurent, 5 avenue Marceau 75116 Paris France, published by La Martinière in France and Abrams in the USA, offer a nuanced portrayal of the designer's creative process and his introspective nature.
In 2004, he journeyed across Russia to capture the tradition of public baths in the documentary Bania, which delves into the melancholy of bodies and Russian culture. 2007 saw the creation of Life Elsewhere, a film that contemplates the peripheral landscapes of French cities, blending documentary and fictional elements. In 2009, he directed two films, one about contemporary artist Felice Varini and another about Ukrainian photographer Boris Mikhailov, complemented by a book, I’ve Been Here Once Before, in coordination with Mikhailov’s retrospectives at the Tate (London) and MoMA (New York). His work continued with Bardot, la Méprise in 2013 and Sigmund Freud, A Jew Without God in 2019.
