Benoît Dervaux graduated in the 90's from the Institute of Diffusion Arts (IAD) in Louvain-La-Neuve. He started out as a camera assistant and cameraman, notably for Strip Tease (RTBF), then became director of photography on several film documentaries - notably Mon Dieu, c'est plein d'étoiles (1990) by his fellow student Philippe Boon.
He then directed his own projects produced by Dérives, the documentary production studio of the Dardenne brothers: Gigi and Monica, Gigi, Monica...and Bianca, La Devinière and À dimanche. In 2002, he began a collaboration with Temps d'images, a festival co-produced by Arte and La Ferme du Buisson, which led to the production of Black Spring, a 26' essay broadcast on Arte in November of the same year, as well as a new show: L'Ordre de la bataille.
Since 2004, Benoît has been conducting individual video research on abstraction and the hypothetical links between the moving image and painting. As a cameraman for Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne's films from La Promesse to the recent Two Days, One Night, he was the director of photography for Solveig Anspach's Stormy Weather in 2003. He also shot Jean-Pierre Denis's La Petite Chartreuse, and collaborated with Jacques Doillon on Le Premier venu in 2007 and with Renato De maria on La Linéa. Followed Post Partum by Delphine Noels and* Les Rayures du zèbre* by Benoit Mariage. In 2014, he directed for Dérives, on a project by André Versaille, Rwanda, life after - Words of mothers.
