Pedro Neves Marques (Portugalsko)

Pedro Neves Mar­ques (Lis­bon, 1984), young artist that lives and works in Lis­bon, Lon­don and Sao Paulo, has made of con­t­a­m­i­na­tion between var­i­ous sci­en­tific fields the fil rouge of all his works in which the indi­vid­u­al­iza­tion of the field of inves­ti­ga­tion, whether it be his­tor­i­cal, soci­o­log­i­cal or aes­thetic, escapes every def­i­n­i­tion. To under­stand his modus operandi just think of his Por­tuguese edu­ca­tion: he obtained a degree in 2007 in Plas­tic Arts at the Facoltà di Belle Arti in Lis­bon and attended, in 2009 and 2010, the Mas­ter pro­gram Art&Politics at Gold­smith Uni­ver­sity in Lon­don.

In Pedro Neves Marques’s pro­duc­tion, in which he expresses him­self pri­mar­ily through pho­tog­ra­phy, instal­la­tion and video, writ­ing has always held a fun­da­men­tal role. On one hand its use is inti­mately connected to the inabil­ity to trans­late expe­ri­ence into visual lan­guage, on the other, it’s asso­ci­ated to the power of sub­jec­tiv­ity. In the artist’s works, there­fore, the def­i­n­i­tion of one’s own self in rela­tion to the other pre­sumes the com­mu­nica­tive dif­fi­culty of shar­ing one’s own expe­ri­ence.
