"Don Mark is a salt of the earth Renaissance man, typical of many of the tough, free-spirited and adventurous Settlers who arrived in the Yukon in the 1970s. He is a much-respected thoughtful and cantankerous man who was the first person to try beekeeping on a commercial scale in the Yukon. Folks like Don, who ran to the Yukon from his life in the South, don’t usually want to camera in their face so it’s one of the special charms of this personal film that we get to experience Don and his hard-earned wisdom through the eyes of his daughter. How to Bee is a beautifully made documentary that reflects larger themes of self-sufficiency, living in the moment and living a life connected to the land. When filmmaker Naomi Mark found her dad needed help with his honeybees after being diagnosed with COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) she asked him to start a project with her, she asked him to teach her about bees. How To Bee follows the journey of a father and daughter over three beekeeping seasons as he passes his knowledge on to her and they come to terms with his changing health.
How To Bee is a celebration of life in all stages set against the unique backdrop of Canada’s North.
