“The White Goddess” portrays a little known aspect in the life of Brazilian artist, engineer, essayist and playwriter Flávio de Carvalho – his attempt to become a filmmaker. In 1958 , already notorious for his controversial artistic experiences, Flávio de Carvalho took off to the Amazon. His plans were to realize an ambitious feature film with surrealist strokes that would unite ethnographic research and the fictional drama of a white girl kidnapped by Indians. The title chosen for the piece was “The White Goddess”.
After a busy period of pre-production in São Paulo, Flávio and his tiny crew joined a group of the Indian Protection Service on an expedition that would make a first contact with the Xirianãs, in the upper Rio Negro region – an endeavour surrounded by risks and hardships.
While the group plundged deep inside the jungle, Flavio got lost in multiple interests and the making of the film was slowly forgotten. Dangers, quarrels, romances and delays would further aggravate the situation, the production of “The White Goddess” would be forever abbandoned.
Through a precious archive material, the documentary of the same name rescues this fascinating and obscure episode in the life of this brilliant Brazilian artist.
