Celebrated editor - and recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Locarno Film Festival - Claire Atherton joined DAFilms curator Christopher Small for a discussion about her life's work, principally as a key collaborator with Chantal Akerman, subject of a retrospective at DAFilms.
Claire Atherton (1963) is a film editor born in San Francisco. Attracted by taoist philosophy and visual ideograms, she turned to studies of Chinese language and civilization, before enrolling in the professionnal branch of the Ecole Louis Lumière in Paris. In 1986, she started working with Chantal Akerman on Letters Home, which triggered a 30-year collaboration on fiction films, documentaries and installations. She was worked as editor with a wide range of directors, young film makers and film students. Atherton’s work as an editor has been honoured with a fully-fledge retrospective at the Grenoble Cinemathèque in 2013. Claire Atherton edited Chantal Akerman’s last film No Home Movie.
